'This is me giving myself some advice about how to leave my daughter in peace to make her own decisions.
Fathers and daughters. I have no experience of sons but have no doubt that these will have at least a few similarities? When I was growing up there was no doubt at all that as far as me and my three brothers were concerned, Dad said how it was going to be and that is how it was. He was not in our lives to ‘take questions’ about any of his opinions. I was a late comer so my brothers would all say that I got an easy ride compared to their experience. I expect they are right. However, laying down the law to my own child, as my Dad had done was a role that I very mistakenly thought that I would simply assume. It only worked for a short while. Teenage years came along and there was brief period when the ‘back and forth’ became a bit stressful but eventually eased off. As she embarked on her personal relationships there were number of occasions when I wanted to step in but fortunately for me, after giving the matter considerable thought I arrived at the conclusion that although I was part of my daughter’s life, that did not mean that would be allowed to or in fact should, remain in control of it in any way at all. I was only there to help; if needed. She was her own person (always will be) and more than capable of making her own choices. I wound my neck in and hoped. The fact that she eventually engaged with me, of her own volition on the subject which generated this song and discussed it with me at length makes me incredibly proud of her. Also, I am pleased that I managed to keep my mouth firmly closed when everything inside me was yelling a loud and infuriated NO!'
