about

Honoured that our Patron Peggy Seeger has let us use this superb track to open our compilation.
"pure joy" Lopa Kothari, BBC Radio 3
As played on Mary Ann Kennedy on BBC Radio 3
And by Tom Robinson ( twice) on BBC 6 Music.

"First there is Peggy Seeger with,"You don't know how lucky you are". Seeger is an iconic performer and herself an unequalled and unique blend of left politics, political action for equal rights, and social activism throughout her history. She is certainly an interesting character and in this song she clearly brings the sights and sounds that are out of reach for younger listeners and makes them immediate with her voice of knowing. The Jazz Age would clearly have come and gone before Peggy was born but her rendition is like a bridge into this age. The lyrics are economical and funny, but with a beautiful depth that is betrayed by the simple words, much like Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. It is like a love note, and unlike some current popular backwards gazes to the novelty of this computerless age, this song feels like the real deal. Lyrics such as ,"I'm not just any woman, looking for any man.. I'm an Angel and you'd better give a damn" are crisp and untangled by cliches of Jazz and lounge singers and is a belter of a song to start the album. Peggy's well-known credentials can be explored on her website here." Peter Taranaski. Shedancesinthemind blog
