about

Track 7 on Daria Kulesh's debut album Eternal Child
The Hairdresser

As children, we are fascinated with morbid stories. Especially if they involve people we know. This is a tale of a neighbour in the apartment building in Moscow where I grew up. She still cuts my parents' hair.
Having lost both parents as a teenager, she was left with a small army of younger siblings to look after. Her maternal urge to feed, clothe and provide for has never waned or relented despite her increasingly fragile health. Unfortunately, the seemingly endless chain of teenage pregnancies and daughters (at my mother's age, she is already a great-grandmother) has produced only takers, not givers. They all expect to be fed, clothed and provided for while getting embroiled in twisted relationships and crime. It's a surreal world of women where toxic men come and go and children are destined to grow into a copy of their mothers. There seems to be no escaping...

lyrics

The Hairdresser
(for the lady that used to cut my hair when I was a child)

You're working at home cutting all sorts of hair
The TV is on, there's no news to share
Your daughter's reckless, the wanton sort
A drunken brawl
and a life cut short...
Your daughter's boyfriend, the rowdy sort
he'll beat her no more, but she's due in court
Accused of murder - it takes its toll -
she scribbles in black marker pen
on a white bedroom wall...

Chorus: Snip-snip, snip-snip, snip-snip
Lull your conscience to sleep
You have ties to cut and secrets to keep
There is no escaping, you're in too deep
So just carry on... Snip-snip

In desperation you rushed about
To borrow money
to bail her out
The lawyer was pricey, but you couldn't fail -
you had to save her from years in jail

You live in the past, in your innocent youth
your tresses were loose, free to flow as they choose
Старый, забытый
юности нашей вальсок...
(Russian: The old, forgotten
little waltz of our youth)
