Down South. ‘Double Back’

Really trying to lift someone’s spirits I guess…

In 1985, after the conflict, I was invited to be part of a Combined Services Entertainment variety show to play for the troops stationed in the Falkland Islands. The travelling was arduous, a long flight to Ascension Island via a (literally) 20 minute refuelling stop in Dakar, West Africa. 3 hours sleep and a 12 hour flight in a Hercules Transport plane (a truck with wings) which refuelled in mid air to Port Stanley. ** We played 12 concerts in 6 days and were flown everywhere in Chinook helicopters. The pilots are all completely mad but fortunately extremely skilled which is why we lived to tell the tale… I included DOWN SOUTH in my set simply because given where we were, I thought the troops would relate to the title. They actually took it completely to heart; we played one concert in a huge hangar where the Chinooks were serviced for 1500 people. They had made their own clapometer which had three settings; SHIT, GOOD and THE DOGS BOLLOCKS!
I was bricking it before I went on, I thought the clapometer would only end up in one place and that they were going to eat me up and spit out the bits! However I couldn’t have been more wrong. Hearing 1500 voices singing; “Listen babe I won’t go without you” defies description. My 25 minute set was gone in a flash, unforgettable.
