about

Track 2 on Daria Kulesh's debut album Eternal Child
Letting Go

This bittersweet and nostalgic song is inspired by Celtic sessions in the pubs of Halifax, where I met my Canadian ex-sweetheart. He took me out sailing on our first date. He played the fiddle for me at the airport. We were both madly in love and made a living by busking on the UNESCO-listed waterfront of Lunenburg. We hiked across Cape Breton and had The Lord of the Rings soundtrack and Loreena McKennitt on repeat in the car... His parents, who had an amazing oceanfront house on an island, were pretty cool and quirky, too - mum very English, an amateur artist and an extra in some Stephen King movies, Dad an existentially insecure and intellectual early music enthusiast. A big contrast to my current wholesome, "normal" and not-arty-at-all in-laws. My personal experience of losing both a partner and a country I came to love may seem extreme, but don't we all lose a whole world built from our hopes and dreams when a serious relationship comes to an abrupt end?

lyrics

Letting Go
(for my first love)

There is a place I left behind -
I thought it would be my forever home
Life can be odd; sometimes you find
That happiness you claimed was not your own

Chorus: Not meant to be
My promised land across the stormy sea
I’m letting go
Will you ever heave a sigh or wish for me?

We both moved on - I have my songs
and I was happy on my wedding day
You have a girl - a homely soul
I’m hearing there’s a baby on the way

Farewell, farewell... I won’t return
and if I did, there’s nothing I could keep
I have a home - away from home
and I must put my memory to sleep
