about

5th track on this special selection of tracks produced by Lauren Deakin Davies on behalf of Folkstock Records.

This track is a duet between these two exemplarary musicians, Ben Smith and Marina Florance.

BEN SMITH
Ben started playing the guitar when he was nine years old. He actually wanted to play the banjo, but due to the lack of banjo teachers in rural Hertfordshire he started to learn the guitar, with the intention of switching to the banjo at a later date. That still hasn't happened..
Shortly after starting to play he was introduced to the sounds of B.B King, and never looked back.
With a style that is influenced by the greats of the blues, funk, folk and beyond, Ben plays a pretty mean acoustic or electric guitar, and has a big voice to match. After years playing many gigs and sessions in many styles, with many different bands and people, Ben was inspired by a 3 month stay in New Orleans, (where he got a chance to play with a host of internationally renowned musicians.) to go out on his own, (or at least under his own name) with a fluctuating line up of co-conspirators, including some old faces and some new ones. He's also finally getting round to doing some solo gigs.

MARINA FLORANCE
Selected by Soundcloud as Soundclouder of the Day in March 2014 and added to Soundcloud International Womens Day Play List 2014. At Cambridge Folk Festival 2013 invited by Brian McNeill to play his famous Saturday Session. 2013 also saw the release of 'my own little piece of the sky' The EP has received great reviews and been played on BBC6 Music. July 2012 Marina's song 'Cry' won Oldie Composers song writing comp, the song recorded by actor Anthony Head, was voted in to the top 4 by , amongst others, Sir Terry Wogan and Bob Harris.
"a wonderful singer songwriter, Marina's original version of 'Cry' was beautiful, she has got an amazing voice." Anthony Head (Buffy/Merlin Actor)

“Marina can turn her voice from an almost deep south growl to torch singer, flooding a song with a real sense of personality as though each song has a voice of its own” Neil King FATEA.
“each song shimmers just like its own special gem, and lingers long in the memory, her voice sparkles like a fine diamond, ‘Parallel Lines’ amazing.” Fan Review

You can enjoy Marina and Ben performing solo at the Dacorum Folk Festival, back to back, so perhaps they might duet this track !? 19th July.
Marina is performing at the Folk on the Water festival on 3rd July

lyrics

We leave you alone, to pick over the bones of an empire
As you self-implode, after nights spent un-weaving your own gold
And she is furious. She wanted to be your undoing
And she is furious. Because you always get there first.

Just look around, who knew they’d build castles here?
And just let it out that your princes fall for thimbles now.
And we are furious. We wanted to be your undoing.
And we are furious. Because you always get there first.

And I will work your fingers to the bone for this one
Because when morning comes you wont be able to guess
That if you set alight to one then they’ll just all burn.
I can promise.

Who knew they’d build castles here?
Who knew they’d build castles here?
You’ll watch your Princes fall for thimbles.
