about

Fake Wonderland

Imagine a very wealthy man, in a five-star hotel suite in the fake wonderland of Mayfair. He is lifted far above the world and the tacky madness of Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland. There is a darkness in his heart and ghosts in his past. Wealth brings only an illusion of happiness and fakeness breeds pretence...

Daria Kulesh sings "Fake Wonderland" on track 8. It is an interesting synthesis of disillusionment of urbanisation and the destruction of wonder. The song itself references a number of well-known characters from classic stories,"Like the Little Mermaid she'll be walking on shores, stepping on the broken looking glass". The intersection successfully weaves fiction and reality and works well due to Daria's diverse voice that captures the message of it's stricken, sometimes hysterical reaction to the theme. At the particular heights the artist reminds me of Louise Jordan. The strong sense of literary theme and magic realism make this one of the stand-out tracks for myself. lyrics

Fake Wonderland
(for a wealthy man I happen to know)

In your suite that overlooks the Winter Wonderland
you are standing far above Hyde Park
Pumping beats pollute the evening air
neon towers glitter in the dark

Chorus: Fake wonderland, vanity fair
I understand you, you stand and stare
Money will buy nothing that lasts
Rumours abound about your past

Who will be the Alice to fall in your Wonderland
now you've parted ways with Queen of Hearts?
Like the little mermaid, she'll be walking on shards
stepping through the broken looking-glass

In this world of mirrors I'm forgettng what is real
clinging to ambition, mixed with fear
I recall a place where I could say what I feel
but it must be far away from here
