about

Track 5 on Daria Kulesh's debut album Eternal Child
At Midnight

In contrast to the previous sweet song, here's one filled with darkness, bitterness and sexual tension. It's based on a South American legend of vampiric witches (brujas) whose heads detach from their bodies and fly out to look for prey at night... Nice. It's actually a reasonably old song, I even performed it with my Russian band back home since my then guitarist, Igor Devlikamov, wrote the tune (although the lyrics have been edited a few times). The current version was written soon after the demise of my long-distance relationship with a fellow student/musician from Canada - the subject matter that inspired two later songs, In Lunenburg (that one's on my band KARA's album) and Letting Go, both a bit calmer and less dark than At Midnight. This song emerged in my "single and adventurous" days during a very intense crush - after the object of the crush, rather inconveniently, had to go back to his home country and I saw history repeating. The song, rather aggressively I think, describes the angst and frustration of being in a long-distance relationship.

lyrics

At Midnight*
(for my short-lived long-distance fling)

At midnight my head grows wings and
leaves my body to sleep alone
I will fly through your open window
drink you dry till the break of dawn
Stretching across the distance, I am a hungry shade
my soul is a string so thin that spiders are put to shame
The village is full of whispers, they know that I am a witch
I am stretching across the distance
as far as my soul can reach

At midday, the sun is scorching
and I'm shrinking, as shadows do
But at midnight I’ll keep on searching
reaching out of my mind to you
The village is full of whispers, they know that I am a witch
I am stretching across the distance
as far as my soul can reach
Stretching across the distance, I am a hungry shade
my soul is a string so thin that spiders are put to shame
